Cold, Wet Spring Threatens Wyoming Sugar Beets

Sugar beet growers in the Big Horn Basin are worried that the windy, cold and wet spring may damage their crops.
Ric Rodriguez says he lost some beets this week but he wasn't sure how many. Keith Murray says he's worried about subfreezing temperatures but hasn't had time to check because he's busy with other crops.
Last fall, cold weather damaged about 30 percent of the Big Horn Basin sugar beet crop and also hurt dry bean, alfalfa seed and corn crops.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture designated Park and Big Horn counties as primary disaster areas, making farmers eligible for some federal aid.
